Brainstorm Blog #1

For my Zine project, I wanted to share the cycle of addiction, specifically narcotics, and the struggles of addicts. I want to demonstrate how the excitement, curiosity, and free feelings that addicts typically feel in the early stages of their addictions. Further, transitioning into the dark ages of addiction. The obsession, lying, stealing, and rabbit hole stage. I want to include stories from people (anonymously) I met throughout the time I have spent in Narcotics Anonymous. Further, I want to end on a happy note with the hope and resources to get help. Although I do not see this being a particularly happy zine, I want it to be informative through the use of images. I also want it to help break down the stigma that often shames addicts, and instead, evoke empathy for those going through an addiction. Dark colors will portray the dark times of addiction, while lighter colors throughout the zine will relay hope. Further, I want to use images that addicts feel they can resonate with, like real text messages I or my recovered friends have sent about their addiction. I want to include fantasy-like images to portray the altered reality that addicts often find themselves in. I also want to turn down the saturation in photos that relate to the darker part of addiction. Overall, I want to portray the realistic side of addiction as it is an increasing issue globally and on a small scale. Many students at CU struggle or know someone struggling with an addiction so I think this idea is relevant and important.
