Reading Blog #1

Following reading “Re-Viewing Visual Literacy in the “Bain d’ Images” Era,” I had many takeaways. First, I really resonated with the article as I find myself scrolling on social media for hours daily, consuming large amounts of images and media. I thought it was interesting when the article spoke about distinguishing the difference between, “superficial, glamorous, and pseudo-sophisticated messages from the truly meaningful ones,”(Avgerinou, Page 2). When I scroll through instagram I find myself stopping on the images of skinny rich influencers but scrolling past the ones about a new groundbreaking find in, lets say, space. This is not because I am not interested in space, but because it's hard not to get stuck on the photos that make you question your self worth. It's addicting. Further, I also found it interesting when the article spoke about Visual Literacy in the New Digital Age. Although the media is draining, it is still a huge interest of mine and why I love digital art. With that being said, knowing the tools to become visually literate was super interesting to me. I liked how one of the bullet points noted that visual literacy pertains to being an, “expressive and innovative thinker,” which I think is something that the visual arts really enables. These skills are essential to the 21st century as they help us navigate through a digital world in an educational, creative, and positive way. Overall, this article helped me see how essential VL is to our day and age and how it can become a blessing to us as we continue to be bombarded with digital media.
